Grateful for Cats, Curiosity, and Cuddles on #CatDay

Our forever family: Taffy, Jack, and Banger (Annie MIA)

In our house in the Santa Cruz Mountains, surrounded by wildness, forest, and fog, there’s an inner sanctuary where a very different kind of energy lives. It purrs. It prowls. It naps in sunbeams and knocks things off tables. It curls up close, demands attention, and exudes mystery. This is the kingdom of the cats. We have four extraordinary indoor beings who fill our days with delight, mischief, purrs, cuddles, and moments of quiet wonder.

We often think of gratitude as a grand or solemn emotion. But my cats remind me that it can also be purring, playful, unexpected, and full of fur.

Let me introduce the cast of characters:

🏴‍☠️ Toothless Jack (Captain Jack Sparrow)

Jack is our oldest boy. He’s white with a black pirate patch and black tail and we always joke he must have stolen from another cat. He’s completely toothless, yet entirely dignified. He’s also my morning meditation partner, hopping onto my lap as soon as I sit down. He doesn’t judge my thoughts. He doesn’t need words. He just sits. Purrs. Breathes. He is a striking example of being in the moment. In his quiet way, he teaches me presence and stillness better than any app or book.

🧡 Big Taffy

Taffy is our enormous orange lovebug — affectionately nicknamed the “Garfield” of the group. With one brain cell shared (allegedly) among all orange cats, Taffy doesn’t worry himself with complexities. He purrs so loudly you feel it in your chest. He flops where he pleases. He reminds me every day that joy can be simple: a patch of sunlight, a full bowl, a human nearby to lean against, a human to dish out a treat or two.

🖤 Banger (Frisky III)

Oh Banger. Sleek, black, and dramatic. He’s earned his nickname honestly, by constantly leaping, darting, and knocking things over. If something fragile disappears from a shelf, we don’t ask what happened, just when. He’s the spirit of chaos and curiosity, teaching us to let go of control and laugh more often. Because sometimes the best response to life’s mess is: “Well… Banger got there first.”

🐾 Annie (Little Orphan Annie)

The only girl in our feline family, Annie once lived wild as a feral kitten, but made the brave and beautiful choice to move indoors. We call her Little Orphan Annie, though she’s anything but alone now. She adores Jim — curls up with him like a little shadow, choosing him every single day. She reminds me that love can bloom after hardship, that gentleness is strength, and that trust is a slow and sacred thing.

Lessons from the Whiskered Ones

Our cats have taught me so much about gratitude and present awareness. They live fully in the moment. They know how to rest. They seek warmth, follow the sun, demand affection, and offer it too — but only on their terms. They have preferences, boundaries, instincts, and moods, and they don’t apologize for any of them.

Isn’t that a kind of wisdom? Isn’t that what we all hope for? For the confidence to be fully ourselves, to curl up when we need rest, to purr when we’re content, and to leap when something catches our eye?

Wild Outside, Peace Inside

Living on a mountain, we keep our kitties indoors. There are too many hawks, coyotes, and other wild things outside. But our home is rich with their wildness-in-miniature: their sleek movements, sharp gazes, and quiet prowling. They are soft but fierce, mysterious but familiar. They remind me that wildness can live safely inside us too… if we honor it.

A Cuddly Kind of Gratitude

So today, and every day, I’m grateful for the quiet patter of paws across the hardwood. For the snuggles and the sudden zoomies. For the chaos and calm. For four whiskered companions who have chosen this home, and us, as their forever people.

To all the cat lovers out there, especially those who share their lives with rescued mischief-makers, gentle giants, or lap-sitting pirates: may your heart be full and your sweaters be covered in fur.
