The Unbreakable Bond Between Humans and Pets
Anyone who has ever had a pet understands the deep, unspoken bond that forms between humans and their animal companions. Whether it’s the enthusiastic tail wag of a dog, the soothing purr of a cat, or the gentle chirping of a bird, pets bring profound joy and comfort into our lives.
They are our companions through life’s ups and downs—offering loyalty, affection, and a unique kind of emotional support that words can’t always express. Pets don’t judge our moods or hold grudges; they simply love us for who we are.
For fifteen years, I hiked with my two corgis, Toby and Piper, on the trails of the Santa Cruz mountains every day. This was our “job” and as working dogs, corgi’s need a job. Our most exciting adventure was a sunrise hike where we startled 3 young mountain lions. They jumped up from behind a bush and we jumped back in shock. Fortunately, they were scared of us and ran off down the trail without looking back. We three stood with our mouths open, grateful that they weren’t aggressive. We stopped our sunrise hikes and went later in the day – when the big kitties are sleeping. My corgi boys gave me joy and gratitude every day and I miss them as they’ve crossed the rainbow bridge. I know they will be first to greet me when I cross over some day.
On National Pet Day, we take a moment to celebrate and express gratitude for these incredible creatures who fill our days with love and laughter.
How Pets Teach Us Gratitude
1. Living in the Moment
One of the greatest lessons pets teach us is how to fully embrace the present moment. Dogs delight in the simple joy of a walk. Cats find immense satisfaction in a sunbeam. Birds greet each morning with song. Their ability to find happiness in the little things is a reminder for us to do the same.
2. Unconditional Love and Loyalty
No matter what kind of day you’ve had, your pet is always happy to see you. They don’t care about your mistakes, your worries, or your bad moods. They greet you with love, every single day. That kind of pure affection is rare in the world and something to be deeply grateful for.
3. The Gift of Comfort
Studies show that petting an animal reduces stress and anxiety, lowers blood pressure, and promotes overall well-being. The gentle presence of a pet has a calming effect that no prescription can replicate.
4. The Joy of Simple Pleasures
Pets remind us to find joy in the small things—a morning stretch, a cozy nap, a spontaneous play session. Their enthusiasm for life’s simple pleasures teaches us to slow down and appreciate the beauty in everyday moments.
Honoring the Pets We Love
For those with pets, today is a perfect opportunity to give them extra affection—an extended walk, a special treat, or extra playtime.
For those who have lost a beloved pet, gratitude can be a way to honor their memory. The love they brought into our lives never truly fades. Today, I’ll take a hike in the woods to honor my boys and stop by for a rest on the park bench we installed on their favorite trail. The little plaque says “Happy Trails” Toby and Piper.
