The Gift of a Quiet Moment
Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there’s a moment, a brief, quiet space, when the world seems to exhale. The dishes are done, the leftovers tucked away, and for a heartbeat, everything feels still. I feel deep gratitude for this brief rest.
Then, almost instantly, December begins to rush in, decorations, plans, lists, invitations, obligations. The season comes tumbling down the hill, full of joy but also noise.
That’s why I treasure these few gentle days between the holidays, this calm before the sparkle, as a sacred pause. It’s a time to rest, reflect, and remember why we celebrate in the first place.
Why We Do What We Do
When I think about it, the holidays aren’t really about shopping, wrapping, or even cooking. They’re about connection, human to human, spirit to spirit. They’re our way of saying, “I remember you. You matter.”
Every card, every small gift, every gathering is a thread in a larger tapestry of love. We do these things not out of obligation, but out of remembrance, of the people who shaped us, the friends who walk beside us, and the divine presence that links us all.
It’s so easy to get swept up in the bustle and forget the deeper why. This year, I want to remember, and to help others remember too.
The Ministry of Presence
At Unity Palo Alto, we have people who don’t have big family gatherings or holiday events waiting for them. I’ve been thinking about that a lot, about how important it is to reach out, invite, include, and simply be there.
Connection doesn’t always need candles or carols. Sometimes it’s as simple as a phone call, a walk, a shared cup of cocoa, or a few words of kindness that say, “You are not alone.”
Maybe this year, that’s my calling, to turn the quiet between seasons into a time of noticing who needs love, and offering it in small, meaningful ways.
Returning to the Center
I’ve learned that rest is not a break from spirituality, it’s a vital part of it. When we pause, we make space for Spirit to catch up with us.
This quiet between holidays is where gratitude deepens. It’s where joy takes root before it blooms again in December. It’s where we refill the well, not with to-do lists, but with presence.
A Breath of Gratitude
Today, I give thanks for the hush between celebrations, for the time to breathe, to reflect, and to remember what matters most.
May I rest before I rush.
May I listen before I speak.
May I reach out before I retreat.
And may this quiet space remind me, and all of us, that we are ONE: connected, beloved, and guided by the same light that shines in every heart.
