What are You Grateful for on Pi Day?

Savoring Life’s Sweet Slices: Gratitude for Pi (and Pie!)

3.14’s a number neat,
A symbol that we can’t complete.
It never ends, it just goes on—
Like waiting for the pie that’s gone!

Cherry, apple, pecan too,
I’d gladly take a slice (or two!)
Pi Day’s great, but truth be told—
The best part’s pie that’s warm, not cold!

Every year on March 14, I am grateful to unite with the mathematicians and pie lovers to celebrate the day of nerds all over the world – Pi Day—a tribute to the never-ending number π (3.14159…) and a delightful excuse to indulge in actual pie. While one is a mathematical constant describing the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, the other is a constant source of joy at dinner tables around the world.

Pi is infinite, irrational, and mysterious—qualities that make it a perfect metaphor for life. Much like the digits of π that stretch on forever, life’s journey unfolds in unpredictable ways, each moment connected to the next in an endless string of experiences. And we choose how to engage with these life adventures, seeing them as a never-ending series of problems or as a series of challenges and opportunities.

And what better way to honor this endless wonder than with a delicious, flaky, fruit-filled pie? Or a chocolate pie, or a pecan pie, or my favorite – lemon meringue! Perhaps even a whip cream filled pie in the face!

Math, Gratitude, and the Simple Joys of Life

Pi Day is a reminder that math is not just about numbers—it’s about patterns, relationships, and the beauty of the world around us. Without π, we wouldn’t have wheels, clocks, or even the ability to perfectly cut a pizza!

But beyond the math, Pi Day can also be a celebration of gratitude. Think about all the small joys that make life sweet—like a warm slice of pie shared with loved ones, a call to my sister across the country to double check mom’s faded recipe, the laughter that comes with a kitchen mishap, or the satisfaction of pulling a homemade dessert from the oven.

Just as Pi is infinite, so are the moments of joy we can appreciate if we pay attention.

Baking Up Gratitude

Baking, much like life, requires patience, balance, and the right mix of ingredients. If you rush the process, you might end up with a soggy crust or a filling that never sets. But if you take your time, follow the steps, and sprinkle in a little love, the result is something truly special.

This Pi Day, why not celebrate by making a pie—not just for yourself, but for someone who could use a little sweetness in their life? Whether it’s a friend, a neighbor, or a local community group, a homemade (or store-bought—we don’t judge!) pie is a simple way to express gratitude and spread kindness.

Pie, Community, and Connection

Sharing food has long been a way for people to connect. Across cultures, pies come in many forms—apple pies in America, shepherd’s pie in England, spanakopita in Greece, and samosas in India. Each of these dishes brings people together, turning simple ingredients into something special.

In many ways, pie embodies gratitude. It’s about taking simple things—flour, butter, fruit—and turning them into something worth savoring. And isn’t that what gratitude is all about? Taking everyday moments and recognizing their sweetness?

So today, whether you’re solving a math problem, baking in the kitchen, or simply enjoying a well-earned slice of dessert, take a moment to appreciate the infinite joys that surround you.
